International Students at Boarding School in the USA: What Makes Forman School Stand Out

October 13, 2022

Forman School students hail from all over the U.S. and across the globe. International students make Forman their home away from home and learn to thrive with their learning difference in high school and beyond.

Benefits of Boarding

At Forman, five to ten percent of our student body are international students. This year, we have international students from 12 countries, from Australia to Italy. Those students join the 85-95% of students who board on campus. Boarding at a high school in the USA provides foreign students with opportunities to gain independence and experience living in another culture.

Forman is a small community filled with all different kinds of people from all different backgrounds. It's a school for kids with LD, so everyone in the school is in the same boat. It’s a school that teaches to use your learning disability to your advantage.” - Jeannette ’25, Italy

While nothing can replace a student’s family, students and teachers who live in the dorms become their own kind of family. Many Forman faculty members who live on campus also serve as coaches, advisors, and dorm parents.

Support for Students with Learning Differences

Forman School was America’s first coed college preparatory school for students with learning differences, including ADHD and dyslexia. Today, we continue to offer unparalleled support. Our curriculum ensures support is built in; students are not pulled out of class. Additionally, our class sizes average eight students, and we have a low student-teacher ratio of 4:1. Small class sizes offer more individualized instruction and effective teaching for students with learning differences.

Students graduate from Forman with the skills and ability to advocate for what they will always need to be successful. All of our students earn the opportunity to attend four-year colleges and universities. After graduation, students join a network of alumni that spans over 40 countries and countless career sectors, from architecture and design to marketing and neuroscience to academia and government.

Note: Our program does not support students with behavioral and emotional difficulties or those on the autism spectrum. We also expect all international students to have strong English proficiency as we do not offer ESOL courses.

Exciting Programs

Our diverse curriculum includes fascinating flagship programs that keep students attentive and excited about learning. From conducting hands-on scientific research in a Costa Rican rainforest to bringing projects to life in our Promethean Lab, an on-campus makerspace, students learn by doing. We believe that when students are interested, they actively engage. And when students engage, they learn.

Convenient Location

Located in northwestern Connecticut, Forman is a two-hour drive from New York City, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Boston, and a one-hour drive from Hartford. Our location allows international students easy access to major airports when traveling home.

On short breaks, such as a long weekend, international students often go home with classmates who live nearby or a short plane ride away. On longer breaks, they often travel home to be with their families.

Connections

When prospective international families are exploring whether Forman School is the right fit for their students, we can connect them with current and past international families. This allows prospective families to hear from those who have gone through similar experiences.
