Forman announces Summer Reading List

Dear Students and Parents,

As you no doubt know, reading over the summer is important. Not only are reading comprehension, critical thinking skills and the writing process inextricably bound, but research consistently reflects that summers devoid of any significant reading inevitably result in demonstrable regression in all language arts skills. Consequently, we are fully committed to our summer reading program as an integral part of the English curriculum.

We are particularly excited this year because the English Department and the Library have worked together to create this year’s list. The list, which consists of contemporary fiction and nonfiction, was created with the specific object of offering high interest, accessible selections. Summer reading should not be seen as a chore, and we hope that you engage with and enjoy the books you choose.

Here’s how it works:

Choosing the books:
• Students should choose one or more of the works listed for their grade level on the attached list. Students enrolled in an honors section should read two or more works from the list. The link below contains descriptions of each book to help you make your choice: http://formanlibrary.wikispaces.com/summerreading.

Taking Notes:
• While reading the texts, students should use the Summer Reading Notes Sheet (on the back of the reading list) in preparation for writing a critical essay about their reading; this will be one of the first major assignments during the Fall Term.

Follow-up:
• During the Fall Term, students will be asked to explain the reasons for their choices, summarize the plot, examine character development, and discuss principle themes explored by the authors.

We urge parents to consider reading these books along with their sons and daughters. Reading is always enhanced when treated as a communal experience.

Have a wonderful summer and enjoy reading!

Sincerely,

Casey Leenders-Redington, English Chair

Sara Kelley-Mudie, Librarian
