Senior Transitional Curriculum The transition to college can be very difficult for students with learning differences. Students who learn differently often find that the college experience a great deal more challenging as the avenues for assistance may be less evident or available. And in many instances, the students themselves are reluctant to seek out the help that may in fact be there.
One of the hallmarks of the Forman Program is the senior transitional curriculum that complements their normal course of study. As the center of the curriculum is the concept of “self-determination” which is the ability to identify and achieve goals based on a foundation of knowing and valuing oneself. Research indicates that this is a key indicator of success in college for all students.
Students are taught that they are ultimately responsible for their own learning. They must “own” it. Working with their content teachers and learning strategists, student develop both the knowledge and confidence to articulate their learning needs as well as an understanding of the resources and support systems available to them in college. Forman graduates leave the school cognizant of the key success attributes and more fully prepared for a more dynamic educational landscape in college.
