Academics

The academic program at Forman focuses on creating an environment that allows and encourages students to grow as independent learners and to believe in their own abilities. We attempt to eliminate barriers to learning so that students can pursue their academic interests. This strong belief in the potential of every student underlies the entire academic experience.

We require our faculty to undergo regular in-service training and professional development so that they remain current with respect to developments and techniques in teaching students who learn differently. Our entire faculty is grounded in the Schools Attuned program from the All Kinds of Minds Institute out of University of North Carolina which establishes a core understanding and common language for content teachers and learning specialists.

Content teachers integrate strategies instruction within the classroom setting. This is a way of teaching academically diverse classes such that content integrity is maintained. Instruction becomes very much a partnership proposition between student and teacher. While the critical elements of the content discipline remain consistent, each student employs and masters learning strategies reflective of their needs.

We are also committed relevant, state-of-the-art, validated research. As an example, extensive research on adolescent sleep indicated that student would likely fare better if the school day were adjusted. At Forman, we start the academic part of the day later and the result is better rested learners in first period classes. We believe that given the right tools and supplied with the necessary skills in a supportive environment, our bright and capable students will succeed. Small classes, opportunities for experiential learning and a close student-faculty relationship are hallmarks of the Forman academic program.

We believe strongly in the value of universal design meaning that a learning environment is accessible to all regardless of individual differences. This is particularly evident in our newly renovated library where the design and the available assistive technology enhances and facilitates learning opportunities.
